Storing CO2 safely and sustainably together

Energy conservation and the use of renewable energy are necessary to prevent further climate change. The capture and storage of CO2 can also make an important contribution to achieving the goals set out in the Climate Act.

_CO2 created during production processes in a factory or power plant can be captured, preventing it from being emitted into the atmosphere. This captured_{CO2 (}usually liquefied) is typically transported by pipeline to a storage facility.

Storage of_CO2 in most cases uses strata that are more than 1 km deep. The Netherlands can use gas fields located in the North Sea for this purpose. The strata, which lie as much as 2 to 3 km below the sea floor and from which natural gas has been extracted, are suitable for safely storing large quantities of_CO2.

For millions of years, natural gas was stored there, under a gas-tight layer, in porous earth layers. In this location, where the natural gas was extracted,_CO2 can now be pumped back, through existing or new wells.

The Dutch government oversees the safety of_{CO2 capture}, transport and storage.
